Updating windows server 2016 to r2

I created a completely new 2016 server installation with absolutely nothing installed on it; no roles, no firewalls no virus scanner no nothing, just a blank server and tried to force it to connect.

WSUS detects that the server exists but that is about it.

Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) heavily leverages X.509 certificates to allow the solution to function securely. If one of these are about to expire, you will get the alert as shown below in the Office 365 Portal.Clicking the link in the alert will take you to: Renewing Federation Certificates for Office 365 and Azure AD.It seems that checking for updates seemed to require around 2GBytes of memory from IIS server and took about 8 minutes. .client Windows Server 2016 machines would become stuck downloading 0% of the updates indefinitely. The only way I found past that was to manually download a recent cumulative update from install that before using WSUS (or use Microsoft's Windows update servers temporarily to fetch a cumulative update).
